Hard Versus Tedious: Knowing the Difference

Hard Versus Tedious: Knowing the Difference

September 6, 2026 · Marco Bianchi

There's a line between a game that's hard and a game that's tedious, and mobile strategy crosses it constantly. Understanding the difference changed how I review difficulty.

Hard is when a map defeats you and you immediately see what you'd do differently. The failure teaches something. You come back with a new plan, and winning feels earned. That's the good kind of hard — Emberfall Saga's bosses work this way, nudging you toward smarter loadouts.

Tedious is when you lose and the only lesson is 'play the same thing again, slower.' No new idea, just more patience required. Grind dressed up as challenge. It's the quickest way to lose me as a player.

When I score a game, I'm partly asking: does losing make me curious or tired? A high difficulty with clear feedback earns respect. A high difficulty that just resets the clock earns a lower rating, every time.
